What do Scooby Snacks, hockey moms, and fro-yo have in common?
They were added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2016.
For those of you who don't know the Oxford English Dictionary ( or OED for short) adds various words it deems popular in four updates throughout the year. This makes sense of course, as new discoveries or inventions are made they need words to describe them (think of computers). However, words are being added that are less about new inventions, and more about their growing popularity. Take these three examples from words added in 2016:
ROFL (rolling on the floor laughing), LMAO (laughing my a** off), and tl;dr (a short summary of a longer text)
These words are more for convenience and don't describe new inventions. ROFL and LMAO describe finding something very funny, which was hardly new in 2016. Nonetheless, the need to communicate that something was funny without hearing laughter became popular, thus new words developed. The same thing goes for tl;dr. While finding short summaries of longer pieces of writing has always been helpful, it becomes almost necessary in forums such as Reddit where everyone has an opinion. Therefore, a new way to indicate a brief summary became popular. As people's needs evolve so does language.
This brings us to my favourite word from 2016: glamping.
So what is glamping? In 2016 Oxford decided to define it as a form of camping involving accommodation more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping. Now what you probably have already realized is that glamorous camping isn't exactly a brand new invention. Just like ROFL or LMAO it's an abbreviation of a popular activity. So the questions becomes: what makes glamping so popular? To answer that I think Calvin and Hobbes is a good place to start:
To start, being in the wilderness is great. Despite what the elements can throw out you, there is something special about being out in nature, especially when our daily lives tend to pull us inside. Like Calvin's dad in the strip, being enthusiastic about being outside is a common feeling. However, there are some downsides to traditional camping. Tight tents, uncomfortable sleeps, and bad food can be unfortunate sacrifices made for outdoor enjoyment. For many people, like Calvin in the strip, these annoyances take away from any good times you may have outside. Consider that this debate between comfort and enjoyment was being had in 1990 when this strip was made. Flash forward to today, and traditional camping is barely even an option anymore. With people working harder than ever, vacations need to be relaxing to recoup lost energy. If you have to deal with all the downsides of camping it makes recharging your batteries almost impossible. This is why glamping is so popular now. From 2016 and on people realize that a more glamorous option for camping is needed. Glamping is here to stay.
