Super Bowl Blues

January 30, 2018

It's that time of year. The time when even non-sports fans get convinced to become football fanatics for one day. The NFL Super Bowl is the most watched sporting event of the year and chances are you've been invited to a Super Bowl party one way or another. Now, if you're like me, sitting in front of a screen for 4 hours on your Sunday night isn't exactly ideal. Here are some tips to make your Super Bowl party tolerable (or better yet...fun!):

1) Concentrate on the food and drinks

If there's one thing that Super Bowl parties always deliver on, it's the food. Try everything available and pig out on your favourites (pro tip: if you find something you like ask the cook for the recipe, it'll be a great icebreaker to meet someone new and you'll get a great idea for your next party dish). If you're a picky eater or if you're worried that you won't find something you'll like make sure you make something you enjoy to bring. That way, if all else fails, you have your favourite food to keep you company.

Drinks are also important. Why don't you grab a couple of craft beers you haven't tried and do a little taste test during the game. If you have some friends going to the same party you could organize a "beer swap" where everyone brings a six-pack of something they haven't tried and shares with the others. Just make sure you have organized a ride home beforehand. Nothing is worse than the 4th quarter scramble when everyone is trying to figure out how to get home.

2) Prop bets

I don't recommend any serious betting, but harmless two dollar bets can be fun. What you can do is print off a sheet of fun prop bets which everyone who is participating fills out. You then keep track throughout the game of the fun things you bet on rather than the game itself. At the end, the person with the most correct bets wins. Here are some interesting bet ideas:

What colour will Pinks hair be when she sings the national anthem?

Will the phrase "Wardrobe Malfunction" be mentioned over or under 1.5 times?

What will the jersey number be of the first person to score a touchdown?

How many times will Donald Trump tweet during the game over or under 2.5

times?

Will Justin Timberlake cover a Prince song at half time?

Of course, the bets can be whatever you'd like. As long as they are fun and keep you interested for what's going on no bet is too ridiculous.

3) Take breaks

You know that the game is going to be long, but it's the Super Bowl so you know that there are going to be commercials galore. Use that time to go do something else. Go outside, get some fresh air. Maybe see if there is a football around that people could toss around to stay on theme. Otherwise a simple walk and stretch of your legs might be enough to keep you sane and ready for more stationary screen watching.

4) Learn something new

So you've decided that you don't like football. That's fair, but maybe it's because you don't understand it. Football has so many rules and strategies that even many players don't know every rule. Take some time to figure out something new about football. With all of the football fans around you, there is bound to be someone who can tell you something about the game you don't know. Who knows? Maybe you'll enjoy the game once you understand it.

5) Do something else

Everyone wants to be included but if going to a Super Bowl party is truly going to make you miserable you do not have to go! In fact, Super Bowl Sunday is probably the best day to do anything other than watching football. Have a restaurant that you like but it's always busy? Tonight it won't be (unless it's a bar). Want to do some night skiing with a wide open mountain? It'll be just you and the employees. Take advantage of everyone else being stuck at parties by having free reign of everything else. It's your life your rules.
